The project was implemented to detect and treat rheumatic fever cases among school children -within the framework of the National Initiative to Combat Rheumatic Fever- in coordination with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education. The initiative was launched in 2014 by the Minister of Health at that time, Prof. Dr. Adel El-Adawy. The project was implemented in the governorates of Qena, Sohag, Fayoum, Luxor, Red Sea, and Qalyubia.
A comprehensive medical examination was conducted for 645,701 school children; and awareness campaigns were carried-out for 17,467 residents and 25,860 school children in the targeted governorates on how to prevent rheumatic fever and heart diseases.
